(Great) Grandfathers of Metal

Good day all,

Recently on one of my blog posts I had mentioned that Tony Iommi is fighting cancer and because of that he will not be able to participate fully in the Black Sabbath reunion tour. A commenter on that blog (https://culturemisnomer.wordpress.com/2012/02/18/ozzy-you-at-the-reunion/) made the observation the heavy metal world doesn’t really have any up and coming band/artist(s) to take the mantle for heavy metal. That got me thinking about Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Alice Cooper, I think at this point we should be considering them the Great Grandfather of Metal and that the Grandfathers of metal are actually bands like Metallica, Motley Crue, Slayer, Anthrax etc… Especially Slayer and Metallica, they have been putting out new music for the past 2 or 3 decades. But like the commenter stated, who is going to take the reins and show up as the new leaders of this metal. There is no one band I can think of that has the support and track record who will be able to make it as long as the bands previously mentioned. Why is that? Maybe a band like Lamb of God? Volbeat? I don’t know, but it is something that we as metal fans should be concerned with. I mean it is great that all of these bands are still around, but our heroes will not be around forever just look at Dio and the possibility of Iommi not winning his fight. Who will be the next Ozzy? Can Zakk Wylde take over where Ozzy may leave off? I really don’t know and that kinda disturbs me. At this point in time it seems that metal bands can’t stay together long enough to become the next great band. Who is it going to be? Let me know what you think, because I have no idea.

A big thanks and shout out to Atothewr for the comment and blog idea! You can check his blog out here http://atothewr.wordpress.com/

I hope everyone has a great President’s day. If you have the day off take a little time to check out some new metal.

Song of the day from one of the (Great) Grandfathers of Metal: Heaven and Hell

Until later, Peace,

  1. Thanks for the nod man. Have you heard this version of Heaven and Hell?

Probably my favorite of all the Sabbath songs and Stryper does a great job with it.
